So mo and I did not get any picking done over spring break, but I did discover some frugal finds while downstate visiting my family... -The Champaign-Urbana Preservation and ConservationAssociation has a warehouse of salvaged architecture. They have off hours, but the gentleman volunteer working let me take a peek while it was closed… they have a ton of great stuff; doors, hardware, fixtures etc. The best part is they are not for profit. Their mission is to reuse and repurpose. He even told me they no longer sell to the Chicago companies because it does not align with their philosophy. |
Next up was Flessors candy shop in Tuscola IL. |
It an old-fashioned diner and soda shop. It was family run business that shut down in the 70s after being in business since the turn of the century. |
The two sisters used all of the old materials in the shop and restored it to its original grandeur. The homemade ice cream and candy is worth the trip. |
Finally, a trip to Beachys, the Amish bulk food store on Arcola Il. This place is the frugal girl’s dream. They have loads of bulk spices, homemade remedies, and flours and grains of every kind. It’s a bit hard to find, but worth the trip!!! |
